Stone House with a Vast Expanse of Natural Beauty
Stay Total Design
DESIGN NOTE
Waheul is named after the shape of mountain lying down that surrounds the village. There is a peaceful atmosphere in the village. Among the calm ambiance, lowly built Batdam-House’ captures one’s eyes. In Jeju, "batdam" is a stone wall piled up with basalt to form the boundary of a field since ancient times. A stone house gate emerges at the end of the alleyway as if it were the entrance to another realm, and you will encounter a new Jeju once you open the door. A new Jeju where green tangerine trees hang everywhere and a simple field wall envelopes the stone house. There stands ‘Batdam House’ surrounded and created by the nature of Jeju.
Other than the ‘Moonganchae’ (old Korean term for building next to the front door), Batdam House consists of three rooms- ‘Anchae’ (women’s quarter), ‘Bagatchae’, (men’s quarter) and ‘Aretchae’ (lower quarter). All of the rooms embrace ample changes in texture and materials which offers deeper experience to the guests. Anchae has a cozy atmosphere for people to gather and relax. It has a comfortable and cozy bedroom and a spacious living room where everyone can sit around. Bagatchae that is across the Anchae was created to present a rich and complete experience with water. spa, heated pool, sauna, and teahouse, it offers diverse relaxation through water. Lastly, Aretchae, the smallest and most private room of all three spaces, provides time for meditation and healing due to its small size. As a result, you can feel your existence and enjoy a sense of freedom that is liberated from others’ gaze.
At Batdam House, you can have various experience through nature and space. As soon as you open the door and take your first step, Batdam House greets you warmly. The interior brightens up with the lightings and curtains that rise following your footsteps, and the temperature and aroma of the space embraces your relaxation. The extraordinary textures and landscapes of Batdam House will awaken new senses. These senses enlightened by Batdam House will leave a lingering aura of rest. In this place that embraces the vast natural beauty of Jeju, you will finally attain relaxation that you have yearned for a long time.
